We continue to add up in a demanding duel

The team has not been able to string together a sixth consecutive victory, but it takes a point and remains co-leader

We continued to add to our tally in a demanding game at Montilivi. Míchel Sánchez's men were unable to string together another win, but they took a valuable point against a rocky Athletic side who are also competing for leading positions in the standings. The team had the initiative and generated chances through the ball, but the Basques also threatened with speed and verticality in a fairly even match between the two teams.

Stuani, who was back in the starting line-up today, opened the game with two clear headers that didn't find the target. The team was the protagonist and tried to break the order of Athletic's rigorous defence, but it was difficult to finish dangerous actions. The referee disallowed a goal to Yangel Herrera for offside by Savinho, and the visitors responded with a powerful shot from outside the area that Gazzaniga deflected with his fingertips.

The visitors came out determined at the restart, and within minutes Girona found the net in a great move by Miguel and Savinho down the left flank. The Brazilian winger crossed into the box and Tsygankov, arriving at the far post, controlled and scored with precision. The joy was short-lived, because ten minutes later Athletic took advantage of a quick transition to equalise. Iñaki Williams received the ball behind the defence and with a shot from inside the area, he beat Gazzaniga with a shot just inside the post.

Girona pushed forward, accompanied by their fans, in search of a victory that for a few moments looked like it might come, but the goal was not forthcoming. Savinho created the best chance of the game, but Pablo Torre couldn't finish it between the posts and the action ended in a corner. This Saturday, Míchel's men will welcome València to Montilivi at 2pm with the aim of getting back to winning ways.
