We are in the Champions League!
Girona make history and qualify for the first time for the next edition of the Champions League.
Girona FC will play in the next edition of the Champions League! With the victory over Barça at Montilivi, the club mathematically certifies qualification with four games left to play in the league, and completes the greatest sporting achievement in its 93 years of existence. It will be the club's first appearance in European competition, and Míchel Sánchez's men will enter the competition in style as a reward for a historic season with unforgettable moments for the entire Girona family. Not only for what has been achieved, but also for how, demonstrating identity and personality.
A dream season
The team began this journey on 12 August 2023 in San Sebastian, drawing the first league match against Real Sociedad (1-1). From then on, the Girona side went on a spectacular run of form. They won the next six games in a row in their best run in the top flight, and after a slip-up at home to Real Madrid, they went on to win five more and did not lose until February. In total, sixteen wins, two draws and one defeat in a historic first round in which the team also led the standings alone five times, and achieved prestigious victories at Barça (2-4) and at home to Atlético de Madrid (4-3).
Montilivi has been key to sealing such an important objective as the Champions League. In the team's most irregular moments away from home during the second half of the season, the stadium has become an impregnable fortress. Fourteen victories, four of them consecutive in the last few rounds, two draws and only one defeat, against the leaders. Fifteen wins, five of them consecutive in the last few games, two draws and just one defeat, against the leaders. In total, 74 points, second, qualified for the Champions League and with the ambition to finish the season as high as possible.
Two decades of continuous growth
With the qualification for the Champions League, Girona FC takes another historic step in the last few years of continuous growth. The club returned to professional football in 2008 after 49 years of absence, and in the following seasons alternated very complicated sporting situations in the Second Division with the dream, for the first time, of being able to reach the top level. In 2017 they achieved promotion to the First Division after several failed attempts, but unfortunately lost the category after two years. After three seasons of trying, in 2022 they returned to the top flight in Míchel Sánchez's first season in the dugout, and with confidence in the project after a bad start. Last year they ended up fighting for European competition until the last matchday and, this season, they have achieved a milestone of a different dimension.
