Girona bids farewell to the Champions League with pride
The team faced an Arsenal team and said goodbye to its first appearance in the Champions League with pride.
Danjuma opens the scoring
Arnaut Danjuma gave Girona the lead on the half-hour mark and made Montilivi explode, which saw the team take the lead against an Arsenal side that had so far conceded only two goals and is the most solid team in the Premier League and the second lowest-scoring in the Champions League. The Dutch striker received in space between the center and full-back, and in front of a Neto who was halfway out, he finished from three-quarters with a shot from half height straight into the back of the net. Danjuma, one of the most active players in the first half, had already tried it in a great individual play minutes earlier that ended with a shot that was blocked by the defense, and then threatened again with a good cross that no one could finish. In fact, just before Arsenal's equalizer, they had a very clear chance. Abel unloaded for Tsygankov, who put it to the far post, and Danjuma's shot was deflected for a corner.
Arsenal reverses the score in two minutes
As in the last match against Liverpool, another penalty has penalized Girona, who despite suffering in the opening minutes with two very clear arrivals of the visitors, was facing Arsenal and with an upward dynamic in the match. Jorginho was in charge of converting the penalty despite the fact that Pau Lopez came very close to deflecting the shot with his hand. A brilliant piece of skill from Nwaneri, who drove inside and hit the long post, gave Arsenal a second in the next move, and before the break Trossard smashed a shot against the crossbar.
Stuani's dream goal, very close
In a second half without much pace or chances, the connection between Portu and Stuani broke the script and a cross from the Murcian allowed the Uruguayan the longed-for goal in the Champions League, but the VAR annulled it for a previous offside of the '24'. The two met again in a similar action in the final minutes, but this time Stuani's header was met by Neto, who made a safe block. Pau López saved Arsenal's second penalty in stoppage time, taken by Sterling. Míchel's team, however, could not do anything to avoid defeat despite showing their best and deserving more.
