Resists despite merits

The team went from strength to strength and deserved the victory in the second half, but failed to score despite generating clear chances.

Girona 0-0 Rayo Vallecano

The victory is resisted despite making merits to get it. Girona has clearly gone from less to more in a match in which the equality of the first half has become an overwhelming superiority in the restart. The only thing lacking was determination up front to convert some of the clear chances that the team generated against a defensive Rayo Vallecano.

Asprilla misses in an even first half

Girona found it hard to feel comfortable in a first half without a clear dominator and with few clear arrivals to the areas. The Girona had more ball, but without threatening much to a Rayo Vallecano brave in the pressure and very orderly. As the minutes went by, Míchel Sánchez's men, unlike the visitors, managed to get closer, and Yaser Asprilla had the two clearest chances. Especially the first one, in which he was unable to take advantage of a precise cross at the far post after a good collective play, and just after he had a long control on a filtered ball from Arnau with a chance to get in front of the goalkeeper.

Absolute dominance without the prize of a goal

Girona has improved a lot in the second half and has been sinking a Rayo Vallecano totally subdued. Míchel Sánchez's team had absolute control of the ball and generated clear chances, making merits to get the victory despite the fact that the goal has resisted. Asprilla broke into space, assisted in the back and Bryan Gil was close to a shot in a very good position. Tsygankov also tried from distance, and Miguel had a very clear one, receiving a pass filtered by Blind with space, opening up space in the front, and shooting high when he had everything in his favor. Asprilla, very active, smashed a ball into the net with a shot from outside the area, and Stuani missed another clear chance by finishing too high in the small area from a cross by Tsygankov. When the game broke down a bit in the final stretch, the visitors stretched in search of a goal, but with few arrivals.

The statistics of the match

The statistics confirm the feeling that both teams left on the pitch. Míchel Sánchez's men were much more dominant with the ball, as reflected in possession (71% and 570 passes), and they were also able to translate this into more and better chances, with up to eleven shots, compared to two for Rayo Vallecano. The visitors, on the other hand, showed a much more defensive and vertical version when they regained the ball, and the fact that they had less of it gave them the opportunity to do so more.
