A historic Girona

With today's three points, Los Rojiblancos reach 52 points and surpass the club's best-ever record in the First Division

Girona are turning the extraordinary into the usual, and today the team coached by Míchel Sánchez was once again on display against Sevilla. The squad rediscovered their individual and collective best, with players like Sávio, Dovbik and Tsygankov leading the way to victory. A victory that not only maintains the team's spectacular rhythm, but also has an even more special meaning as it is the three points that make this group the best-scoring in the top flight. Until now, the record was set in the year of our debut in the First Division with 51 points and, with seventeen games to go, we surpassed it with 52 points.

The start of the match was crazy and totally decisive for the final result. Isaac Romero surprised the defence after ten minutes and, unmarked, finished off a lateral cross inside the area to give his team the lead. As has become the norm this season, Girona have been keen to mount a comeback, and conceding has awakened their most lethal side in attack. Dovbyk only needed three minutes to equalise with a header from a good cross by Sávio, and the Ukrainian giant never stopped.

Dovbik found the back of the net again just after, in a great move that Sávio started with a level run, he filtered for Portu and the latter assisted for the '9' to finish at his pleasure. In the blink of an eye Girona had already changed the scoreline, but the Ukrainian wanted more, and he single-handedly cooked up the third by bringing the ball down, creating space for himself and slotting the shot inside the near post from just outside the area. Hat-trick in just six minutes, one of the quickest in the history of LaLiga, and the game was settled.

Portu, still before the break, had a very clear chance to extend the lead, but his shot went just wide. At the restart the Girona side maintained their dominance and constant threat against a Sevilla side incapable of reacting, and from set pieces the post repelled the fourth. Tsygankov finally found the net from another Sávio gift in the form of a cross that he only had to push over the goal line. Cristhian Stuani was the only one to finish the scoring, finishing off a magnificent link-up between Pablo Torre and Miguel, who served him the goal on a plate.

It was another night to remember today at Montilivi, with five goals that corroborate the brutal attacking potential of a team that, in addition to the comebacks, has also been a great goal scorer. Now it's time to think about the next challenge, the Copa del Rey, and a win on Wednesday against Mallorca would open the doors to some historic semi-finals.
